I received a comment, question, from our blog of yesterday, where we were announcing our move to formalizing our story, the queen anne story, and making it available to others.  We were requested to define, “diversity.”

In our case we came to following this dream and desire to serve others from a background in corporate, then private business, focusing on construction, remodeling. We were use to having many choices in the trades, which came equipped to work. We had never operated a fine dining restaurant, however, linda did go to restaurant management school. And, we were pretty sure one of our roles was to be good servants as we were convinced the majority of our customers were not going to be faith based as we were.

Our immediate need for diversity was to arrive to find very few in the trades who were willing to work for us, and most having limited skill sets. In the majority of the cases the laborers who would work for us needed pretty close supervision and they did not have experience in many things.

Our next need for diversity was the openness to allow a man in the food service business to counsel us, as we wandered through things like health inspections, requirements, etc.

And, the majority of our customer base have been open in sharing their faith, which is great, but limiting our desire to work with those seeking a faith.

Finally, we were shocked in the diverse customer base that comes through the door on a daily basis. We know that some of them do not share our moral views, however, they are just as loving and respectful as our faith community. In fact, ’09 brought diversity in customers that sweeten the business in that they are comfortable in who they are and that is much easier to deal with, than those on a campaign trail to make sure others know what they think, stand for.

Diversity in dealing with others has been a real blessing, it has grounded us, caused us to be more aware of others needs and to be flexible in serving customers.
